A velvet mantle from the 1880s. Mantles such as this became popular in the 1870s as an alternative to a full coat which complimented the new fashionable bustle. This mantle incorporates velvet padded pompoms reflecting the enthusiasm Victorian women had for a style of French decoration known as passementerie which included fringing, braids, tassels, ribbons and cord.
