The Awakening Conscience (1853), by William Holman Hunt
When the painting was first exposed in 1854, the critics reacted with disgust at the expression on the woman’s face. This is nowhere near what her face inspires in us… that’s because her face was “fixed” by Hunt after the painting was bought. Its new owner couldn’t bear to look at her pained expression everyday, so he had Hunt “soften it”. And so, her look of horror has been replaced with an expression of fascination at whatever she’s seen outside the window, and we’re left to wonder what she really looked like before. (Wikipedia)
